KARACHI: Pakistan’s top amateur golfers on Wednesday made a below-par start to their campaign in the 2012 Bangladesh Amateur Championship at the Kurmitola Golf Club in Dhaka.

On a day when India’s Manav Das returned with an impressive card of three-under par 69 to top the leaderboard after the first round, Pakistani golfers were unable to impress much. Muhammad Rehman emerged as Pakistan’s best performer on the opening day with a two-over 74 to take the sixth spot on the leaderboard.

He was followed by Muhammad Ali Hai, Pakistan’s reigning amateur champion, who carded four-over 76. Ali, who won the Bangladesh crown in 2010 and was a runner-up in the event last year, was not pleased with his showing in the opening round. “I was a bit rusty but hopefully will play better in the next rounds,” he told ‘The News’ from Dhaka.

Waseem Rana, one of the most experienced amateurs in Pakistan, flopped in the opening round as he finished with a card of 78. Also making an unimpressive start was teenager Mubariz Ahmed, making his first international appearance. The Karachi boy finished with 86. A total of six teams are competing for top honours in the Bangladesh Championship which will conclude on February 4.
