Hunain, Majid make fine beginning in U21 snooker

KARACHI: Both Pakistani cueists, Hunain Aamir and Mohammad Majid Ali, got off to sensational starts in the IBSF World Under-21 Snooker Championship 2012 which got underway in the Chinese city of Wuxi on Saturday.

 

Hunain and Majid, the finalists of the Jubilee Insurance National Junior Championship 2012 staged in Lahore earlier this year, began their campaign in the best possible manner, whacking their respective rivals in straight frames.

 

Having been coached and trained by Mohammad Yousuf, a former world champion, neither of the two youngsters showed any nervousness on their maiden appearance, playing to their potential and completing the job clinically.

 

Pakistan’s national junior champion Hunain overwhelmed Omer Ahmad Hashem of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in straight frames with the scores of 59-27, 79-24, 65-24, 67-17.

 

Majid meted out similar treatment to Alaeddin Wali of Libya.

 

Hunain has been placed in Group G alongwith Belan Sharif (Sweden), Omer Ahmad Hashem (UAE), Jurian Heusdens (Belgium), Rhys Clark (Scotland), Lu Ning (China),

 

Ayoub Matug (Libya) and Alireza Khodaparast (Iran).

 

Majid has been drawn in Group C in the company of Rogan Beedle (New Zealand), Lalrina Rentheli (India), Mitchell Mann (England), Alaeddin Wali (Libya), Alvyn Depoorter (Belgium), Alexander Gauss (Austria) and Zhu Yinghui (China).

 

A total of 63 cueists, divided in eight groups, have entered the competition. There are eight contestants in each group, except Group A which has seven entries. League matches will continue until July 19. The knockout games will start the following day. The final is scheduled to be held on July 22.
